Fort Collins, Colorado – March 16, 2010 –Navy veteran and U.S. Career Institute medical billing graduate Karen Neary is her school’s DETC Outstanding Graduate for 2010. Karen is featured in the recently published 2010 DETC Outstanding Graduates and Famous Alumni booklet. The Distance Education and Training Council (DETC), a nationally recognized accrediting agency for distance education institutions, publishes the annual booklet to showcase top performers from its member schools.
U.S. Career Institute (USCI) chose Karen as its Outstanding Graduate based on these criteria: course GPA (96%), professional competence (demonstrated in her Navy duties and in her current medical billing tasks), professional persistence (in landing her first billing client) and business success (evidenced by her growing client base). These accomplishments make her a role model for USCI students everywhere. Karen served in the Navy from 1999 to 2006, working in the areas of information technology and satellite communications. A series of ankle surgeries forced her to accept a medical Honorable Discharge. After hearing a friend rave about the USCI course she was taking, Karen used her GI Bill benefits to enroll in the USCI medical billing course in early 2008. Only a month after finishing the course in mid-2008, she began cultivating a work relationship with a methadone clinic. They eventually signed on as her first billing client. To date, one of her proudest achievements has been the collection for the clinic of more than $60,000 from a past-due account. Last month, Karen signed a second client: another methadone clinic. She’ll add a third soon. She’s now processing hundreds of claims a month, and she recently raised her per-claim rate from $4.50 to $5.00. Working for clinics that offer identical services streamlines Karen’s billing procedures. Being able to study medical billing at home allowed Karen to complete her course in a matter of months while caring for her young daughter. Last month, Karen and her husband welcomed their second  daughter. Next summer, Karen will continue her progress toward a B.S. in Business Administration. Regarding her billing hours, she says they are “very, very convenient for my schedule.” Her goal is to build her business to the point that she’s managing a team of billers. She says, “I would recommend U.S. Career Institute to anyone looking to start their own business. The course was well written and easy to follow. The staff was helpful and friendly. And best of all, it works!” U.S. Career Institute is operated by Weston Distance Learning, Inc. (Fort Collins, Colorado), which also operates two other distance-education schools: At-Home Professions and McKinley College. All three schools enroll students throughout the country. Weston courses prepare students to work in more than 25 fields offering solid job prospects and earning potential. Currently, Weston is launching a new course every few months. Its state approval is issued by the Colorado Department of Education’s Division of Private Occupational Schools. Each certificate course and degree program is accredited through the nationally recognized Distance Education and Training Council. Each is approved for GI Bill, VA and DANTES military education benefits. To learn more about Weston Distance Learning, visit http://www.westondistancelearning.com/.
